A Polish project appreciated in the Young European Heritage Creators competition

The Young European Heritage Makers #HeritageMakers competition is carried out as part of the European Heritage Days - the largest celebration of cultural heritage in Europe. We are pleased to announce that the "Mirror of Heritage" dedicated to the history of the market square in Solec Kujawski, in which children aged 6-11 took part, was among the five best projects in all of Europe.

The aim of the Young European Heritage Makers competition is:

  1. Collecting experiences and stories about how children and young people understand the European dimension of their local heritage.

  2. Identifying and presenting the work of young people interested in heritage.

  3. Networking of future #HeritageMakers with their peers from other parts of Europe.

The competition included photo and/or video materials documenting projects implemented with children (6-11 years old) or teenagers (11-17 years old) based on local cultural heritage. These activities took place from September 1 to February 28.

The 5th edition of Young Creators of European Heritage was attended by representatives of various countries: Armenia, Finland, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Ukraine. The children went on a journey, discovering the stories and traditions that define their identity and enrich their cultural heritage.

How has our local market changed over the centuries? What events are associated with this space? What buildings and monuments can we see now? What new functions should be given to this space in the future? #HeritageMakers tried to answer these questions as part of the "Mirror of Heritage" project.

Young #HeritageMakers were divided into two teams:

  • group I, using old maps and available information, made a model of the historical version of the market square and the surrounding streets and monuments,

  • group II focused on the contemporary model of Solec Kujawski.

The approach used allowed for comparison of results. Participants could talk and share their impressions, but also comments on how they perceive changes in the market and the city. The project was a living history lesson, fostering a deeper understanding of the past and its impact on the present.

The winners in the 6-11 age category included teams from Spain, Italy, Slovenia and Ukraine. More about projects from other countries can be found on the website – Empowering Young Minds: The Young European Heritage Makers Selected | European Heritage Days

The projects completed as part of the #HeritageMakres competition are testimony to the creativity, passion and dedication of children and young people across Europe. Through learning and celebrating heritage, they inspire us all to cherish the past, the present and shape the future for future generations.
