About the Warsaw Uprising in Osaka

From April 16, 2024, one can visit the exhibition "Warsaw. Phoenix from the Ashes", which tells the story of the Polish capital under German occupation, during the Warsaw Uprising and post-war reconstruction. Osaka is the second Japanese city, after Hiroshima, where the exhibition is presented. The exhibition was prepared by the Warsaw Uprising Museum and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in cooperation with the Polish Institute in Tokyo and the Osaka International Peace Center.

The exhibition can be viewed by guests of the Osaka International Peace Center, which opened in 1991. The Osaka museum shows the difficult history of the city, including: the effects of air raids conducted by the Allies after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese institution documents the harm and loss caused by war while emphasizing the importance of peace.

“The Warsaw Uprising is crucial to understanding the history of not only Warsaw, but also Poland, Europe and the entire World War II. It allows you to understand the situation in which all of Central Europe found itself at the end of the war - there was no way to avoid the totalitarian regime." - says Jan Ołdakowski, director of MPW.

The exhibition, which will consist of over 50 exhibition panels, 3 showcases with exhibits and a film screening, will show the fate of Warsaw - a city affected by the cruelty of the Nazi extermination machine. It will begin by showing pre-war Warsaw, a flourishing city with a rich cultural and entertainment life. The subsequent parts of the exhibition will show occupied Warsaw: German policy towards the Jewish and Polish population, street terror and the lives of residents in extremely unfavorable conditions. Warsaw will be presented as the capital of the Polish Underground State, its structures will be shown, as well as the administration, media, education, "Żegota", the army and the actions carried out by the Home Army.

The culmination will be the story of the Warsaw Uprising in all its complexity. The exhibition will feature exhibits from the Warsaw Uprising, e.g. an insurgent armband, a Field Mail letter box and important documents, such as the ID card of Maj. Gen. Tadeusz Komorowski "Bora". At the end of this part of the exhibition, the film "City of Ruins", showing the completely destroyed city in 1945, will be shown. The last part of the exhibition will show the rebirth of Warsaw - rising from the rubble through the efforts of the entire society to become a modern metropolis today.

The tragic fate of the city's inhabitants will be presented to the Japanese audience by the screening of the film "Warsaw Uprising" (directed by Jan Komasa), based on the chronicles of the uprising. It will be held at the Osaka International Peace Center on June 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, 2024.

The exhibition will last until July 14, 2024.
