Adam Glapiński before the State Tribunal

At one of the press conferences, Donald Tusk said that the application to impeach the head of the National Bank of Poland, Adam Glapiński is ready and will soon be submitted to the Sejm. Tusk and his party have announced this step towards Adam Glapiński a long time ago.

Already in mid-February, the KO was considering collecting signatures for a motion to bring the head of the NBP before the Constitutional Accountability Committee.

The president of the ECB, Christine Lagarde, defended Glapiński:

“In the situation when the members of the former opposition parties do indeed submit an initial motion to the Sejm, any measure affecting your ability to perform your duties as President of the National Bank of Poland, if not in accordance with the law, may affect your independence and therefore the independence of the General Council’ (European System Central Banks - editor's note) - wrote Lagarde.

"As you mentioned in your letter, Article 14(2) of the Statute of the European System of Central Banks and of the European Central Bank, in order to guarantee the independence of the governors of central banks, provides protection in the event that the Sejm were to decide to impeach you, taking into account taking into account that such a resolution would lead to the automatic suspension of you from the duties of the President of the National Bank of Poland and a member of the General Council. You could refer such a resolution to the Court of Justice of the European Union and ask for an assessment of its legality," she added.
