The work of the Polish master of painting depicts a scene of a coin transforming into gold. This was done by the alchemist Michał Sędziwój in the Wawel chamber. In 1939, the painting came to the Art Museum in Łódź.

The painter's secretary, Marian Gorzkowski, wrote that the reason for creating the painting was Matejko's belief in the importance of the topic and the opinion that [...] he saw the benefit and progress of the country in the revival of crafts [...], however, the priority goal of painting the painting was to ensure existence of the family.

The alchemist of Sędziwój and Zygmunt III found a buyer in 1881, who was Emperor Franz Joseph. Until 1939 it was in private hands, entrepreneur Karol Eisert donated it to the city museum in Łódź.
