Barbara Sowa - the oldest participant of the Warsaw Uprising - has died

Barbara Sowa has died at the age of 106 - she was the oldest living participant of the Warsaw Uprising to date. She died on a symbolic day - August 1, 2024, on the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the heroic uprising.

Barbara Janina Sowa, née Gettel (1918-2024)


Barbara Janina Gettel was born on June 23, 1918. Before the war, she lived at 69 Filtrowa Street in Warsaw. She was a student at the Warsaw School of Economics. In September 1939, she was supposed to start her last semester of studies. And then the war broke out...


During the occupation, she took clandestine nursing courses and a secret hospital internship with Dr. Janina Bachańska - Kuźniecow, pseudonym Jakub, at the Infant Jesus Hospital in Warsaw. When needed, she also served as a liaison and distributor.
