Establishment of the Prussian Confederation

On March 14, 1440 at the meeting in Kwidzyn, the representatives of most districts and cities, having sealed the formal act of establishing the Prussian Confederation (Preussischer Bund), established it as a confederation of Prussian nobility and towns to oppose the arbitrariness of the Teutonic Knights.

Members of the Lizard Union were also involved in its creation. Members of the Prussian Confederation initially sought to obtain a number of rights and privileges, including political, judicial and economic ones, similar to those held by the nobility and burghers in other countries, and not against the rule of the Order on Prussian lands. The main role was played by the Old Town of Toruń (especially mayors Johann Huxer and Hermann Rusop), Chełmno and Gdańsk, and the middle-income knights of the Chełmno Land, Gdańsk Pomerania, Oberland and Warmia. The leaders of the Prussian Confederation included: Gabriel, Hans von Baysen and Stibor von Baysen, Hans von Ziegenberg.

The Prussian Confederation (German: Preußischer Bund or Bund vor Gewalt) - an organization to defend interests and rights, the establishment of which was decided at the congress of Prussian lands and cities in Elbląg on February 21, 1440. There was established the draft statute. On March 13, it was decided to convene the Prussian districts absent in Elbląg to seal the act. Hans von Ziegenberg led an eight-person delegation to the Grand Master, who presented to him the need to establish a union in view of the conflicts in the Order and the intentions of the Poles. The delegates asked for the maintenance of privileges and promised to help the Grand Master stay in power, according to Wikipedia.
