The painting is one of the first works created by van Gogh, coming from his last Dutch studio. It was located in the annex of the artist's family home. The work presents an extremely realistic landscape of a Dutch countryside, it can be assumed that the painter has been observing this type of views since his childhood. The exhibition will tell about a certain part of van Gogh's history and the path he took to become one of the most famous artists in the world.

From a forgotten workshop

The exhibition will also show the adventurous history of the painting, which was recreated by Stefania Ambroziak from Mt 5:14. The work, found 13 years after van Gogh's death, had come a long way before it found its way to the Warsaw Museum: stored for years in the attic, purchased by an antiques dealer and then a tailor, it almost accidentally avoided destruction. The canvas still bears traces of these surprising adventures.

Research at LANBOZ

The exhibition at the John Paul II and Primate Wyszyński Museum takes place after interdisciplinary research at the Laboratory of Analysis and Non-Destructive Research of Historic Objects (LANBOZ) and the painting conservation process carried out by the Painting Conservation Studio at the Princes Czartoryski Museum in Krakow.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: in the first, visitors will be able to see van Gogh's early work, and in the second, learn about the historical and educational topics related to it. These will include: behind the scenes of research and conservation of the painting and the secrets of Vincent van Gogh's work - the way of mixing paints and the approach to color. In the early period of his work, the artist focused on dark, subdued colors, because he sympathized with the so-called The Hague School.

The exhibition will also reveal to visitors the structure of the painting and show its characteristic features preserved to this day, proving the origin of the work. The story of van Gogh's Dutch studio will also be an important element - its fate diverged forever from the artist's fate after he left for France, so the exhibition will show the path of Country cottages among trees from the studio in Nuenen to the museum rooms in Warsaw.
