Head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, on Nuclear Sharing

The presence of American nuclear weapons on Polish territory would provide additional advantages in terms of security guarantees, said the head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera. He admitted that the topic of Poland's participation in the Nuclear Sharing program requires restraint in reporting.

The United States, within NATO, shares a number of bombs with nuclear warheads with some of its allies. This is done as part of the "Nuclear Sharing" program. The weapons remain under the supervision and control of the United States. They can, with American consent, be carried by the planes of the countries where they are stored. These include Germany, Italy, Turkey, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The head of the National Security Bureau, Jacek Siewiera, emphasized that the presence of American nuclear weapons with their deployment within the territory of the Republic of Poland "would provide additional advantages in terms of security guarantees and would increase security in the international arena."

"The North Atlantic Alliance is in a very difficult situation in which, in the face of undermining or denunciation of the provisions of the NATO-Russia Founding Act, in the face of the unanimous statements made by President Lukashenko and Kremlin leaders about the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, it is necessary to take appropriate responses," he said.

"The Russian Federation applies international law very selectively - especially in aspects related to deterrence policy and the policy that has stabilized the highest level of the escalation ladder in Europe over the past decades. The security architecture on Poland's side requires adaptation in the area of conventional forces, which is being done (... ) but also (it is being done) by the North Atlantic Alliance as part of the alliance's nuclear deterrence. And this work is currently underway," he added.

Siewiera said that the issue of Poland's participation in the Nuclear Sharing program "has been raised many times over the last few years, both by the head of state and by government representatives." "The state's position on this matter is known both in the area of classified information and in the area of public communication," he added.

The head of the National Security Bureau drew attention to the restraint in informing "both on the part of the president, who in response to the journalist's question took a similar stance as in previous years regarding the readiness to adopt the Nuclear Sharing infrastructure in Poland, as well as the prime minister, who also suggested in restrained words the need for consultations to learn the exact intention of the actions of the commander of the Armed Forces.
