Meeting with Folk Sculptors

Folk sculptors from the Łódź region, inspired by folk culture and folklore, met with Marshal Grzegorz Schreiber. The pretext for this meeting was the publication "Conjured from Wood. Folk Sculptures of the Łódź Voivodeship", prepared by the Łódź Voivodeship government.

Marshal Schreiber presented the artists with an album presenting their works, along with short biographies. The publication included several dozen artists from the entire province, divided into cultural subregions. Five sculptors from the vicinity of the city participated in the meeting, which took place on June 5 at the district office in Łowicz.

Passions passed down from generation to generation

Elżbieta Świderek, one of the participants of the meeting, shared the story of her involvement in sculpting.

"My father sculpted and he passed this passion on to me, although I did my first work only after his death," says Świderek, daughter of sculptor Mieczysław Żegliński.

Ms. Agnieszka Głuszek-Nowicka, another participant, emphasized how important it is for her to refer to local traditions.

"I dress in the Łowicz style and so do my works. They refer to the Łowicz culture in style and character," says Głuszek-Nowicka.

Folk Museum in Sromów

Wojciech Brzozowski, who runs the Folk Museum in Sromów with his wife, was also among the guests. The museum's four pavilions feature handmade lime tree sculptures, colourful cut-outs, spiders, paintings and embroidery. Most of the 600 figurines are mobile and present scenes from the life of the Łowicz village. Among them, you can also find famous sportsmen, such as Adam Małysz, Kamil Stoch, Justyna Kowalczyk and Zbigniew Bródka.

Preserving folk culture

The meeting was an excellent opportunity to honour the work of folk sculptors, who pass on traditions and folk culture by recording them in wood. The publication "Conjured from Wood" is not only a testament to their talent, but also an important cultural document that contributes to the preservation and promotion of the heritage of the Łódź region.
