Passenger port at Okęcie

On April 29, 1934, the new passenger terminal at Okęcie was officially opened. The previous one was operated at the Mokotów airport. Today, Chopin Airport is located in the Okęcie estate (from which its common name comes) in the Włochy district. It is the largest airport in Poland.

Due to plans to develop Pole Mokotowskie, a decision was made to transfer passenger traffic to Okęcie. It was supposed to be a temporary location for the civil airport (until a new airport in Gocław was built). The ceremony was attended by, among others: President Ignacy Mościcki, Prime Minister Janusz Jędrzejewicz, the diplomatic corps and directors of seven European airlines. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Field Bishop Józef Gawlina.

It was the largest civil-military airport in the Second Polish Republic. There was an entrance gate to the airport with a tower towering over the area, approximately 50 meters high, located at the intersection of Żwirki i Wigury and Committee of Workers' Defense streets. A cluster of aviation-related enterprises was established around the airport, including: the Airframe Factory belonging to the National Aviation Works, Polskie Zakłady Skoda (later the PZL Engine Factory), Experimental Aviation Workshops, and the Aviation Technical Institute.
