The British praise Poland for building a canal on the Vistula Spit

The Daily Express claims that the Spit excavation is a Polish symbol of sovereignty

"The canal through the Vistula Spit, the construction of which was opposed by Russia, is a symbol of Poland's determination to chart its own course in the constantly changing landscape of international trade and diplomacy" writes the British daily "Daily Express" on its website.

The Daily Express calls the trench an "engineering marvel" and compares it - on a smaller scale, of course - to the Suez Canal.

Before the creation of the canal on the Spit, ships heading from Elbląg to the Baltic Sea were forced to sail through waters controlled by Russia, and to free themselves from this, Poland decided to dig a canal over 1 km long.

“However, Russia vehemently opposed the project, seeing it as a challenge to its dominance in the region. Despite Russia` efforts to stop construction of the canal, Poland persevered, citing the need for greater autonomy in maritime matters" writes the Daily Express.

“For Poland, the canal through the Vistula Spit is not only a strategic infrastructure project, but also a symbol of sovereignty and independence. By reducing its dependence on waters controlled by Russia, Poland wants to strengthen its position as a key player in regional trade" emphasizes the British daily.
