The inauguration of Zbigniew Herbert 100 birthday anniversary celebration

Last Sunday, 10th of March a debate “Herbert and the world” took place in new reading rooms of the National Library. The event was a inauguration of the Herbert` 100 birth anniversary. The literary production of the author of “Report from the Besieged City” was discussed by poet and translator Edward Hirsch, president of Guggenheim Memorial Foundation John Simon, poet and publisher Michael Kruger and poet and publisher Ryszard Krynicki.


The debate was organized by the Foundation “Zbigniew Herbert” and the National Library. The guests were welcomed by the President of the Foundation Ms Maria Dzieduszycka and the Director of the National Library, Dr. Tomasz Makowski.


Many distinguished guests included former Prime Minister Jerzy Buzek and director of the National Cultural Center Robert Piaskowski had participated in the event.


Zbigniew Herbert's poems were read by Agata Buzek, and at the end of the debate, the audience heard "Report from a Besieged City" in an extraordinary interpretation by Zbigniew Herbert himself.
