The Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IBL PAN) was established on July 23, 1948.

It is a research institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences established on July 24, 1948, initially subordinate to the Ministry of Education, then to the Ministry of Higher Education and Science.

In 1951, the Institute was granted a statute. Since 1952, it has been an institution of the Department I of Social Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in 1998 it gained legal personality. The research conducted there mainly concerns the history of Polish literature, literary theory, history of culture, literary documentation and lexicography.


The organizational structure of the Institute includes research laboratories (historical and theoretical literary, documentary, lexicographic), the Center for Literary Information and editorial and editorial teams.


The basic field of research conducted at the Institute is the history of Polish literature; in addition to it: issues of the theory of literary forms and the historical and literary process, literary language and style, theoretical and historical poetics, versiology and metrics, popular literature, as well as problems of literary culture and literary awareness of individual eras. The Institute also conducts extensive bibliographic and documentary, lexicographic and editorial work.
