"There is nothing left for me to do but to cover you, my Mother, with such rays of glory that other people's missiles cannot reach you... And I must do this - God himself inspired me - because he developed a great work in my mind. I will send the first part to the printer in a few days and now I am copying it out". With these words, in a letter to his mother, Juliusz Słowacki described his work on Kordian. This outstanding drama, devoted to the fate of Poland and Poles, was published in exile 190 years ago and still arouses recognition among readers.
