Turów to be closed

Trade unions comment the judgement of the Provincial Administrative Court. According to this judgment the mine will be closed after 2026. The head of NSZZ "Solidarność" at the Turów lignite mine, Wojciech Ilnicki, informs that it is impossible to obtain a new license for mineral extraction in such a short time.

“In the situation when we do not have a new license, this ruling will mean the stop of mining in 2026. We will not obtain a new license in such a short time - it is simply impossible, taking into account the entire procedure, including the cross-border procedure. Therefore, this decision clearly states that Turów will be closed after 2026," said the trade unionist.

He added: "This is also bad news for other residents of our country, because the closure of the mine means an increase in electricity prices. After the closure of Turów, Poland will purchase very ecological electricity from Germany – from these new two lignite mines and power plants that they are building.”

Ilnicki hopes that PGE GiEK and General Director of Environmental Protection will appeal against the non-final decision of the Provincial Administrative Court to the Supreme Administrative Court.
